The Flaming Lips returned to Indy on a gorgeous Friday night hot off the release of their 15th LP, Kings Mouth. They took the stage to the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey as Wayne Coyne coaxed the audience into hysteria. A blast from the CO2 canons and massive balloons fell over the crowd as they tore right into the first song “Race for the Prize.” Coyne came out waving their signature silver Mylar balloon reading “F*ck Yeah Indianapolis.” The Lips were just beginning the elaborate stage production. The background was adorned with giant LCD lights that pulsed throughout the night. Next up was a giant inflatable pink robot that set the background for “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.” Coyne explained the song was not about a battle with robots but supporting and believing in one another through difficult times. Wayne headed out into the crowd next riding a faux unicorn as he donned rainbow wings. Steven Drozd pulled out a voice-boxed guitar for their rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner.” Coyne accompanied with a pair of gigantic synthetic hands with lasers shooting out from the palms. The lights shot out to the stage, audience and then onto a huge disco ball that sprayed a glow throughout the outdoor amphitheater. The night would not be complete without crowd surfing in a Zorb ball to the tune of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” A Flaming Lips concert is truly a spectacle to behold. Bandleader Wayne Coyne has so much charisma and infectious joy about him that it spreads throughout the audience. A Lips show is a surreal trip that makes them a must see experience. Catch them on the summer tour 2019 and check out their new concept album King’s Mouth released in April.
