A Dirty Dozen with ROGER YOUNG from CINDER – August 2019

| 14 August 2019 | Reply

According to a recent press release: “A true hard rock band.  Melodically aggressive vocals, intelligent song writing, and a musicianship skill matched only by the passion behind it. Originally named Jesus Gun, Cinder hails from the Southwest Florida region and the 1990’s rock club circuit it was formed in. Cinder released the album House Full of No Trust on Rock Ridge Records in 2005.  Followed by the E.P. You in 2010, including the re-record of the single Soul Creation, with producer Matt Laplant (Nonpoint). CINDER NOW… Original members Roger Young and Brian Colbert are joined with bassist Steve Reich, former Nixon’s guitarist Scott Bush, and new guitar player James Wilder.” We get frontman Roger to discuss new music, influences, and much more…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release. What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through? Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

Each one of these songs have such an individual personality that it brings the album as a whole to life.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

I’ve just always been into music, singing in my early childhood to church choir to school programs. Even a televised Christmas solo piece.

3. Building on that, is there a specific song, album, performer, or live show that guided your musical taste?

I would say my favorite live show would have to be The Elvis Presley ’68 Comeback Special. Just sitting around in a circle surrounded by screaming girls, dressed in leather, in all his glory. His performance was so powerful.

4. Who would be your main five musical influences?

Elvis, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles to Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains. And a bunch in between.

5. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?

Well, I did that in 2001 with Scott Weiland with the Break Your Silence album and the song “Lush.”

6. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before? What is the one comparison a reviewer or fan has made that made you cringe or you disagreed with?

True Hard Rock with aggressive yet melodic vocals.

7. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

Spending my life doing what I love and being able to pay the bills doing it.

8. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks, who gets the drinks in, and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

A lot of us cook, some dabble, some better than other, I guess Steve our bass player would be the best cook. Sing along? No. Sit around and talk shit about each other? YES

9. When was the last time you were star struck and who was it?

When I first met Scott Weiland.

10. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

This question doesn’t even make sense.

11. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”, even if it didn’t change your current situation?

Well, there are plenty of “missteps”, but they have led me to where I am now, no do overs needed here.

12. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

As a band it ranges from Sgt. Peppers to Ok Computer to Back in Black etc. such writing and experimentation is so inspiring.
