According to a recent press release: “Hard Rock duo THEM FIXES has released their debut EP, Electric Prophetic, with a full streaming of the single, “Kill the Nights.” Them Fixes is 2 dudes steeped in Nashville dive bars striving to climb new sonic heights by combining minimalist ingenuity, copious amounts of energy, and riff oriented rock.” We get Dustin to discuss new music, influences, and much more…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

Our debut release is pretty straight forward. It definitely follows a theme lyrically from start to finish that has represented the journey of the band thus far. We wanted to put our best feet forward so we made sure to include as much killer with no filler as possible.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

I was 13 when I began to play guitar and from the moment I started learning Silverchair songs I knew it was something I wanted to do. When I formed a band in high school the comradery was what really cemented it. I knew I always wanted to play in a band and from those bonds through music.

3. Building on that, is there a specific song, album, performer, or live show that guided your musical taste?

There’s is a lot to that one haha!  Early on when I started digging in I was a Warped Tour kid and I loved Pop Punk but as I got older I started to discover more Hard Rock/Stoner Rock bands like Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, Fu Manchu and others that led me down a path that opened up into Blues as well. Jimi Hendrix is one of my guitar hero’s til this day. Not to mention we are super big fans of Royal Blood.

4. Who would be your main five musical influences?

Jimi Hendrix, Josh Homme, Dave Grohl, Mike Kerr (Royal Blood), and Red Fang.

5. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?

Queens of the Stone Age for sure! Their rawness and groove is amazing and it would be awesome to see what would come out!

6. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before? What is the one comparison a reviewer or fan has made that made you cringe or you disagreed with?

I would describe it as Hard Rock / Grunge genre wise. Fuzzed out, riff oriented rock, mixed with High energy and just enough dynamics to cool it down when need be. I had one guy actually say we sounded like Five Finger Death Punch only with 2 people one time and to be honest I for the life of me cannot see how one would draw that kind of conclusion haha!

7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

Hmmm…I’d say it’s the journey. It’s a hard road, but the experiences, people, and writing music with my best friend and hitting the road to perform it is something that’s hard to describe.

8. When was the last time you were star struck and who was it?

Shawn and I do really well to split the bill on food and drinks! Definitely no acoustic cracking out haha! We keep the “Wonderwall” to a minimum.

9. What is the best part of being a musician? If you could no longer be a musician for whatever reason, what would be your dream job?

It was years ago and not in this band but we met Bobby Capps of .38 Special after a gig one evening. He really dug our set and took us to show us his studio in Nashville. It was pretty rad.

10. What is one question you have always wanted an interviewer to ask – and what is the answer? Conversely, what question are you tired of answering?

I have no idea actually. Most likely something that deals with people. I’m a very people person and I love being in crowds.

11. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”, even if it didn’t change your current situation?

This is a tough one. Because this current project in a way is a do over. We’ve had the opportunity to start something fresh and apply what we’ve learned and heard. It’s been a blessing.

12. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

Deja Entendu by Brand New.  That record defined a large portion of my musical taste for quite some time and still does outside of this project. It was one of the first CD’s that lived in my CD player and helped me get through a lot in my early high school and college days.
