Again produced by Accept and U.D.O. drummer Stefan Kaufmann, Pildriver’s latest album is full of driving Teutonic riffs and classic rock powerhouse grooves –much like their last few records, in fact.

In a former life they were a Status Quo tribute act – hence the name – and whilst they never completely leave that behind, there is real progression here with the band moving in their own direction to great effect.

Opening with Stomp, the stage is set: this is big-chorus, anthemic, chant-along rock and roll with a good time the goal. It does exactly what it says on the tin: stomps!

Agitator (rhymed with Alligators) is a bit of a throwaway lyrically but that rhythm, man – it’s relentless. It’s tempting to say it is obvious that a drummer produced the record, such are the great sounds and grooves from drummer Hans in ‘t Zandt.

One For The Rock sounds like classic ‘80s German metal – which is always a good thing – and if you think this is just going to be Big Dumb Rock Fun (not that there’s anything wrong with that) Piledriver get a little political on the title track. See the cover for context.

Farewell and For Freedom And Friends take things in a very different direction, the latter a gentle and graceful acoustic piece which shows a whole new side to Piledriver.

Nazareth touches on religious belief in the face of children dying, before Sparks takes us back to Piledriver’s rockin’ best. As a tribute to the late Rick Parfitt, the band revisit their Quo roots for a cover of Rockers Rollin’, which originally appeared on their Rockin’ All Over The World album in 1977. It fits in well, of course, before the band close the album with Little Latin Lover, the most Quo-like of their original compositions here.

Piledriver never disappoint, and Rockwall makes it easy to see why they are such a big drawcard in their native Germany and the rest of Europe. Rock on, rockers.
