If you’ve never experienced a Super Bob show live, you don’t want to miss it. The rap/rock trio stopped by The Concourse in Knoxville during their recent tour for the first time since the venue has been renovated. Two local bands kicked off the night, Juggernaut Stomp and Annandale. Juggernaut Stomp is a band from Sevierville, Tennessee, with a refreshing old school blues rock sound. Annandale is one of my favorite female-fronted alternative rock bands from Knoxville, featuring Ashley Grennor’s incredible voice and her husband Chad on guitar and vocals (who is also known for playing bass in the well-known alternative metal band 10 Years). City Of The Weak from Minneapolis, Minnesota took over the stage next, another female-fronted rock band with lots of attitude and a sort of pop-punk energy that reminded me of Paramore’s earlier music. The band also performed several covers, including “Pardon Me” by Incubus and “Tainted Love.”
Super Bob quickly turned The Concourse into a dance party. The band is full of flying dreadlocks, synchronized jumping, and a few jokes about Canadians – mixed with EDM-infused rock songs that are a throwback to the height of early-2000s rap metal. Songs on their setlist included “Cali,” “Superfly,” and covers of LMFAO’s “Sexy And I Know It” and “I’m In Love With The Coco” by O.T. Genasis. Super Bob seems to be masters of their own genre and put on a spectacular visual show, even though there are only three members. They have visited Knoxville several times in the past and I’m looking forward to the next time I can catch them on stage.
