Thirteen year old Rob Fitzgerald has fallen head over heels for the new girl at school, but for a super shy teen, even talking to her is a panic attack waiting to happen, despite the encouragement of best friend Andrew, and the ribbing of his acerbic Pop.
Then, out of the blue, Rob receives an anonymous series of challenges via text message.
“These challenges have nothing to do with impressing Destry Chamberwick. They are all to do with Rob Fitzgerald impressing Rob Fitzgerald.”
And so Rob embarks on a journey of the soul, challenging himself in ways he never thought he was capable of even attempting, let alone succeeding at. Enter the school talent competition?!? Become goalkeeper of the soccer team?!?
Jonsberg packs his story with charm and humour, and an extremely clever twist at the end which I didn’t see coming at all, such is the intelligence and compassion in his writing. No spoilers, just trust me – this is a lovely read, perfect for teens, with powerful messages about being true to oneself, and about tolerance and respect.
