Book 2 in Sandrone Dazieri’s series sees Deputy Police Commissioner Colomba Caselli making a cautious return to work after the abuse she received in previous book Kill The Father, and again reunites her with special investigator and unique damage case Dante Torre.

A woman calling herself Giltine, after the mythological Angel Of Death, is slaughtering dozens of people across Europe – in a poisoned train carriage arriving in Rome, in a burnt out nightclub in Berlin, and if her plans succeed, at a gala event in the centre of Venice.

Colomba and Dante’s awkward handling of the initial case result in her being suspended, but she pursues the case anyway, facing new horrors as she does so, even after teaming up with special ops cop Leo.

The trail leads them to explore a facility known as The Box: a prison full of horrors behind the Iron Curtain in the shadow of Chernobyl.

Dazieri’s novel is full of surprises, intricately plotted, and especially deft at handling the frailty of his characters. There are no superhero cops here, everyone struggles to deal with the crimes committed and their impact on their own lives, making this especially human, despite the otherworldly atrocities committed.
