A French production made in 2014 to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Paris, Resistance charts the progress of the French Resistance movement as they defied the German invasion in World War II.

Over six episodes we follow both students and teachers as they attempt to undermine the invading forces, under the constant stress of the shadow of war, and the ever-present fear of being caught.

The series does a wonderful job of portraying the hope inherent in people who are being otherwise crushed by oppression. That hope ebbs and flows as compatriots are captured and executed, betrayers become evident, and the constant misery of a life of servitude hangs over their heads.

If not for the Resistance many feel France would never have thrown off the yoke of servitude to Germany. If not for Hitler’s maniacal obsession with conquering England, his invasion migt even have succeeded leading to a very different Europe today.

As a new enemy to freedom seeks to destroy our way of life, Resistance is a timely reminder that to give up is to surrender not only our freedom, but all hope and dignity as well.
