A Killer’s Confession brought their A Very Killer Christmas tour to the Open Chord just a few days before the holiday. It was the perfect venue to hold the show, as the staff installed a Christmas tree on stage and everyone was in the holiday spirit. Before the show even began, Jeremiah from You Are A Toy played a few acoustic covers, including “Heathens” by Twenty One Pilots, “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons, and “Take Me To Church” by Hozier. Then, Autumn Reflection kicked off the show as the local act. This hard rock band was more enjoyable the longer they were on stage, mainly for their energetic drummer and impressive lead guitarist/vocalist. To quote a guy from the crowd, “Did you just sweep and sing at the same damn time?!” You Are A Toy had the best interaction with the audience. Frontman Donovan Black commented that their job was to hype up the room for A Killer’s Confession, but I feel like they dominated the stage like a headliner. Often, I’ve discovered that quality rap/metal in a live setting is sometimes hard to find, but You Are A Toy blends the two genres in a way that filled the room with energy. I recommend checking out their album called “The Difference Is…”

A Killer’s Confession sound like they belong on a bigger stage, especially considering frontman Waylon Reavis’ experience. However, AKC is different from Reavis’ former band, Mushroomhead. I would compare AKC to bands like Red, Breaking Benjamin, Korn, and Disturbed, but I feel like they’re beginning to form a sound of their own. Reavis’ vocals are strong, melodic, and at times very harsh. He also seemed very comfortable in front of the smaller crowd, and often stopped to comment on issues like the media, millennials, and his appreciation for the south. Personally, I think this band will see a lot of success and growth in 2018. They already have great energy and a tight sound on stage, with singles that are catchy and very heavy. It seems like Reavis is in his perfect element. AKC already has an EP called “Unbroken” (one song even featuring Korn’s Brian “Head” Welch), but be sure to check out their newest singles “I Wish” and “Angel on the Outside.”
