Classic rock meets Classical… mashups are one thing, but to have actual rocks tracks tweaked and twisted with a rock flavor makes for a fun evening. On a dreary rainy Saturday night in Lexington, MI, lucky ticket holders at two well attended shows were witness to the fun, excitement, and cool ass rock that is Femmes Of Rock. As the foursome hit the stage with their violins in hand supported by a drummer and some sound effects for added flavor, most of the audience wasn’t sure what to expect.
Having spent a little time with the Femmes between shows, I knew their excitement and talent was capable to win over just about any crowd… even Rush fans. Led by violinist and arranger Nina Di Gregorio, the quartet was completed by Christina Rose, Chandra Meibalane, and Carissa Werner. Drummer Michael Licata held down the backbeat and tempo of the show from open to close. Watching the four women take control of their instruments and deliver a show full of awesome classic rock with an electric violin twist was an experience. Kicking the show off with the “Star Spangled Banner” and rolling into Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” was a cool way to immediately grab everyone’s attention, but killer versions of Pink Floyd tracks, Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” complete with vocals from the group, and classics from The Who kept every person in attendance engaged during the groups time on stage. A personal high for me was the AC/DC mashup that seemed to not only be fun for me and the crowd, but the women on stage, as the foursomes smiles seemed to permeate the music. Another cool moment was checking out the band perform The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” which happens to be the groups first single and video. It was amazing to watch four performers share the stage and spotlight from track to track – Nina, Christina, Chandra, and Carissa held their own when called for and became a cohesive classically classical rock machine at other times through the set. If you get the opportunity to see this group do their thing in your city – or even somewhere driving distance – I strongly suggest you grab some friends, buy some tickets, and go enjoy a fun night of rock and roll…
