Starlight – or L’etoile Du Jour (Morning Star), or Angel Of The North – is a trippy French excursion into the surreal world of an emotionally dysfunctional circus troupe, with punk legend Iggy Pop playing an angel who appears to dwarf clown Elliot (Denis Lavant) with a bizarre mixture of encouragement and abuse.
Elliot is more miserable than most of the circus performers – they’re all broke and angry, as audiences are so thin on the ground, but his beautiful wife Angele (Natacha Régnier) is also having an affair with Ringmaster Heroy (Tchécky Karyo). Meanwhile, Elliot barely even notices the obvious affections of Béatrice Dalle’s singer Zhora.
Starlight is more than surreal – it’s quite avant garde, in a very French way (this is a French Language film, in case you were unsure), and Pop and Dalle steal every scene they’re in – as usual.
