Twenty years after his debut album, Jordan Patterson opens his follow-up record with the blues chug of Favourite Boy, a pleasant enough romp lifted by a wailing harmonica and his clean, engaging vocals.
With a laid-back delivery and an easy to listen to vibe, this album whizzes by in a flash, with slow ballads (Can We Fall In Love Again), rockier blues (the Fabulous Thunderbirds-like She’s Cool, Heartbreaker) and breezy pop (You’re My Girl, Do You Believe), slow grinding blues (If You’d Help Me Please) and mid-tempo funkiness (Living Without Your Love, Play My Song) and plenty of tasty playing, it’s all quite nice – a bit too nice in fact, as we’re left wanting a bit of aggression, something raw to fire us up.
Twenty years of concert promoting obviously wasn’t enough to extinguish the fire in Patterson’s belly for playing and recording his blues rock tunes, so it’ll be interesting to see where he takes his rekindled career from here – with luck it won’t be another twenty years before album #3.
