The Shinkickers 2016

Seeing The Shinkickers is a bittersweet experience these days. 25 years in, they remain amongst the cream of the blues rock crop to have emerged from Perth, but with main man Gerry Quigley back living in his native Ireland their local shows are few and far between.

Whether playing their own tracks like Something Blue, reinventing Hey Joe a la Tim Rice-with-a-touch-of-Hendrix, doing The Doors or The Pogues, there’s two things about The Shinkickers that make the jaw drop.

One, of course, is the insane guitar skills of Quigley, proving that good things often come in small packages. A diminutive bloke in stature, he is a giant on the axe.

Secondly is how tight the band are as a unit, making magic with what appears to be telepathic connections, and two sets rushed by in a flurry of singalongs and solos before we had to leave to make it to Taj Mahal’s show in another part of town.

Hurry back, Gerry.
