Subtitled “Techniques & Ideas for Transforming Your World”, New York graphic designer and illustrator Timothy Goodman’s fascination with the Sharpie and all it can do is seemingly boundless.
Starting with the bold assertion that “art is whatever you can get away with,” Goodman starts at the start: the Sharpie range and its history, before encouraging the reader to doodle, and to turn those doodles into art.
Yes, it’s fair to say that SHARPIE ART WORKSHOP may as well have been sponsored by the Sharpie people themselves, but Goodman is subversive: his book isn’t simply glorifying the pens, it’s celebrating what they can do.
Fun Ways To Doodle screams one (sharpied) chapter title, before he explores patterns and words, and words as patterns, and practical uses for all three. There’s gift wrapping, post-it note art, gift cards, miniature portraits, murals and techniques a-plenty.
With adult colouring books all the rage, this is the next logical step for those of us too creative to be constrained by colouring inside other people’s lines: and a great inspirational text for kids and their teachers.
