Flying in as a precursor to album #3, The Date’s latest single Ghost Notes is arguably their best yet. Featuring a beguiling picked guitar riff that’s been blown in on a hot country wind over a driving bass-led rhythm, it’d be a crime if this didn’t pick up some commercial radio airplay.
Lyrically the song tells of an irresistable yearning for the special person in your life when you’ve been apart for too long – seeing them around you in every ghost note.
Building Me A Bunker, which will also feature on their due-in-July third album Master Date, and is led by Rob Susanto’s slide guitar, while bassist David Moran’s vocal weaves a scary tale of modern paranoia and psychosis.
Non-album track Silent ‘Til Sundown showcases a harder rocking edge to the band, with Susanto again in the spotlight with some great soloing.
To call The Date simply a ‘blues rock band’ is to do them an injustice: musically and lyrically they have matured beyond that label, with Susanto, Moran and drummer Mark Thomas operating as one. I don’t know where a band this good fits in the modern music industry, but if there’s any justice they will be touring far and wide before the end of the year.
