Underground Hound - Soulless City-Sterile Streets cover

It don’t get any more underground than Underground Hound, as evidenced on this second full length album by the Perth raw rock outfit.

In the course of just a few songs we see a theme repeated: Radio Birdman rehearsing for Nick Cave’s birthday party (yeah) in Captain Beefheart’s basement-cum-torture chamber.

In amongst this filthy dirty and sometimes guttural mix are some great songs: Cave Of Sin, Mason Curse, Black Widow, March Into The Sea all stand out in tall company, and all kick out the jams and leave them panting for breath on the floor.

There’s some slick organ and slide guitar that open up the sound here and there dramatically, enhancing the moodiness of the album a lot.

Soulless City/Sterile Streets is not a depressing album, but it is one born to be listened to in a dimly lit room with a glass of red wine or strong liqour, an album to brood over, and to live with as you glean its diamonds out over repeated listens.
