From the moment that Tex Perkins strode onto the stage and launched into the classic I Walk The Line he had us Johnny Cash tragics in the palm of his hand.

Ably assisted by Rachael Tidd, Perkins proceeded to recount many aspects of Johnny’s life from the five year old boy picking cotton, his fifteen year old brother dying in a sawmill accident, and into his turbulent adult live, full of drugs and booze and his strong faith.

It has been noted by many that Johnny had an angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other!

Tex gave us a collection of classics in the first half of the show culminating in a duet with Rachael of the iconic Jackson.

The second half of the show opened with another iconic track – Folsom Prison Blues – which sent the audience into raptures.

This was followed by other classics including A Boy Named Sue and 25 Minutes To Go, then to what has become Johnny Cash’s signature number, and title of this enthralling theatre show – The Man In Black.

The final number was the song written for Cash by June Carter – Ring of Fire – which was also the last song he sang in public.

Tex Perkins presented an excellent performance and was well supported by backing group The Tennessee Four, who gave a polished performance throughout the show. The mandatory encore was a triage of a number of Johnny’s classics and Tex left the fans screaming for more.

The Man In Black starring Tex Perkins runs through to 31 August at The Regal Theatre.
