Genre tags and labels gives a certain conotation about music that drives some to love and some to hate. After listening to Lefty Williams Band’s new EP, I refuse to give them a generalized tag – how about “great classic rock sound that spans the genres”? “Crescent” opens the EP with a cool riff and even cooler vibe that builds from the open to the close, through the verses and chorus. The bluesy tones in the vocals mix perfectly with the guitars and horns. “Let It Roll On” has a Clapton-esque groove to it that weaves throughout the track, which is given added punch with some cool piano parts and runs in the right spots, accentuating, not saturating the song. “Coming Apart” is blues from deep within the soul. The vocals take this track on a journey and the rest of the band simply follows the story, giving it an appropriate soundtrack. “You Know I Love You” is a track that seems to strip away everything and give the listener a song in its most basic form – a voice, a guitar, and many contributions from the rhythm section, whether it be cool percussion and horns or emotion inspiring piano and pass. “You Don’t Tell Me” is, soup to nuts, one of the better rock tracks I have heard in a long time. The song is rock – forget genres and labels. The guitars are well played, the vocals direct, the rhythm section full and complimentary to the rest of the song. This is the best way to end a disc and leave a listener wanting more!
