Metallica - Lords Of Summer garage demo cover

Not counting the Beyond Magnetic EP or LuLu, it’s been six long years since Metallica released new material. Death Magnetic seems a lifetime ago now, and for a die hard, lifelong Metallica fan like me, It’s increasingly harder to endure the lengthy wait for new material from the band that brought metal to the mainstream.

Now in 2014, something new from ‘Tallica finally arrives, and although I don’t think this track will surface on any future album, it is not a bad song at all.

After multiple listens to both the live version, and the “garage demo” of The Lords of Summer, I think it’s safe to say that this is a collection of riffs that have been assembled into some form of structure, and had some quick and simple lyrics thrown at them in order to appease the fans that are salivating at the prospect of hearing a new song. Whatever.. I’ll take what I can get!

The Lords of Summer has riffs aplenty. There are parts of it that hark back to the Kill ‘em All thrash days, parts that crush like Master Of Puppets, and definitely parts that fit well with their 90’s output. It actually serves as a stroll through the history of Metallica.

Lyrically it’s simple in its attack. A sing along chorus will have the live crowds getting involved, and the versus, although not overly memorable like past Metallica output, serve the song well.

As I said, I don’t expect this to make the eventual album, but if this is a sign of things to come, then I personally think Metallica are heading in the right direction.
