Shane’s Music Challenge: IRON MAIDEN – 1983 – Piece Of Mind
7/10

Iron Maiden - Piece Of Mind cover

Coming off the back of the huge success of Number Of The Beast, Maiden needed to consolidate their new position as chart topping, flag waving, leaders of not only the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, but also the biggest Heavy Rock/Metal success story of the era to that date.

They had also bedded Bruce Dickinson in as vocalist to great success, and he was keen to take a more proactive role in the writing and direction of the band from this point onwards. Additionally, drummer Clive Burr was out, and Nicko McBrain – formerly of French rockers Trust – was in.

Piece Of Mind, featuring the band mascot Eddie on the Derek Riggs painted (yeah, people used to PAINT covers before photoshop!) cover chained up in a padded cell wearing a straight jacket, head clearly lobotomised (a piece of his mind taken out… geddit?) performed exactly those things with punchy metal classic singles The Trooper and Flight Of Icarus, sitting comfortably alongside galloping, literary epics Die With Your Boots On, Where Eagles Dare, Quest For Fire, Sun & Steel and To Tame A Land, which all reference books or movies.

On top of all that, there’s my favourite: Still Life, a creepy and spooky tale of a lad drawn to the whatever dwells mesmerically at the bottom of a dark, dark pool. Look away before it’s too late, dude!!
