Veludo (Portuguese for ‘velvet’) weigh in with a resolutely modern rock collection for their debut release, the loops and synths providing a likeable wash over the four tracks on offer here.
The bedrock of their sound lies more on the soft rock side of life though, with Gabriel Vargas’ soaring melodic choruses and rich vocals hinting at classic Noiseworks, U2 or INXS.
Lead single Stay Young and the similarly catchy Indigo deftly balance the technological aspects of their sound with their rock background to great effect, while Are We On Fire? sees the Perth ex-pats go boldly into Birds Of Tokyo territory.
The ostensibly melancholy yet ultimately elevating Endless Wonder features guest vocals from co-writer James Reid of Kiwi wunderband The Feelers, and sees him channelling a performance worthy of Michael Hutchence’s best work.
Veludo is an assured and thoroughly enjoyable first shot from the Melbourne band, and shows a remarkable evolution since their days playing Perth pubs as Gasoline Inc, and promises big things for the future for this four piece.
