Summer’s (almost) here and the time is right for chilling out with Dom Mariani’s Majestic Kelp’s latest superb offering.
Widescreen surf guitar tunes that channel The Swingin’ Sixties (4 In The Morning), Bombay Western Soundtracks (Bollywood & Western) and sublime Byrds-meets-Bacharach melodies (Turn Up The Sun), this first Majestic Kelp album in seven long years is an excellent collection of sun-drenched tunes that will perfectly complement a sunny afternoon or brighten up a cloudy one.
Long time Kelp cohort Stu Loasby is back on bass, piano and organ, and there’s a host of guest musos featured, including Mariani’s Domnicks bandmate Howard Shawcross on bass, Grammy winning pedal steel guitarist Lucky Oceans and Nunzio Mondia, better known as sideman to Shadow Hank Marvin.
Previous Majestic Kelp outings have been predominantly instrumental, but Turn Up The Sun sees Mariani singing more than ever.
The best surf movie soundtrack never made, Turn Up The Sun is immaculately crafted by a true musician’s musician, and a joy to listen to.
