Reaper’s Riddle work up a grindingly heavy slow burner in their new single Drop, which starts with a deceptively mellow and almost grungey guitar intro, before drums are pummelled and vocalist Clayton Mitchell announces “This Is It”.
Cue riffs, pounding percussive rhythms and Mitchell’s foreboding vocals on this tale of meeting the hangman’s noose. The song works so well by marrying Pantera-heavyness with something altogether other-worldly, courtesy of a hauntingly simple piano riff which adds a true sense of the macabre to proceedings.
The b-side (or whatever we call a digital bonus track to a single nowadays!) is a re-recording of an old favourite of theirs, Devil’s Fire. Relentless and driving in a Rob Zombie-minus-the-electro-bits way, Mitchell’s vocals again take centre stage and propel the track forwards like a haunted house on wheels.
With this sort of quality on offer, debut album The Ballad Of Tristan Daye is going to be very eagerly looked forward to indeed.
Reaper’s Riddle launch the single and video for Drop on Friday 16th August at The Civic Hotel, Perth – Facebook event
