Boasting an eclectic range of influences from Foo Fighters to Soundgarden to Mary J Blige and Pink, Neverwonder deliver their latest EP as a showcase for new singer Alima Soul.
Aptly monikered, Soul’s sensuous and powerful vocals are full of just that – soul – and lift the sometimes overly soft pop rock songs up several notches with a professional performance from start to finish.
It’s not that anything here is bad – far from it, each song is well written and the performances from Vincent & Andres Ramos (bass and drums) and Scott Ramsey (guitar) are slick throughout, it’s just that the production (courtesy of the band and E) lacks teeth to match Soul’d wonderful voice, all too often erring on the side of lounge music rather than the exciting.
Neverwonder bring a little funk and rock to their soulful pop, and a meatier production next time round to up the energy levels could really change their playing field – one to watch out for.
