Aussie guitar whiz Lloyd Spiegel’s latest offering is a heady (and tangled) brew of licks and blues which is as intoxicating as it is beguiling.  Opener Murder For Breakfast may be the quintessential Spiegel song – a moody blues with an unforgettable melody, searing guitar line, and a great lyric.

The template set, another 11 great songs follow – from slower, smoke hazy brooders (the title track, Dirt Road To Paradise), to lively belters (Won’t Turn Back, Medicine, the Aussie ZZ Top boogie Ten Miles From Your Door) and bright and breezy groovers that harken back to a sweeter time (Letter From Tokyo, Yesterday’s Sins), then back again, Spiegel never lets up for a moment.

Other standouts include The Man That I Was, a string laden epic tale, could be the soundtrack to a spaghetti western, such is the gravitas with which it is delivered; and Blade, another moody, cinematic track full of drama and Spiegel’s enigmatic blues.

Whilst Speigel hasn’t recorded anything to equal his magical and ecstatic live shows, “Tangled Brew” may be his best studio effort yet.
