The idea of delving into the dark heart of the Snow White fairytale, originally written by Medieval horror-lovin’ dudes the Brothers Grimm, seems pretty normal now, what with Snow White & The Huntsman and Once Upon A Time all over our screens. But this adaptation, which leans far more on the Grimm’s predilection for nastiness than Walt Disney’s saccharine version, dates way back more than twenty years to 1997.

Apparently Sigourney Weaver took the role in order to play a mother trying her best with her step-child – at least at first – and there’s no denying that Taryn Davies and Monika Keena play Lilly as a difficult brat. Weaver revels in getting her evil stepmom on in due course, though, and poor old Sam Neill doesn’t have a lot to do other that ignore the new mama bitching her way around the castle.

Snow White: A Tale Of Terror is Weaver’s movie through and through: campy and creepy she rules the roost throughout, with an underlying malevolence whether trying to bond with Lilly or attempting to kill her.
