Few films challenge the narrative process or mix it up quite like American Animals. Combining small elements of Pulp Fiction and maybe even Memento, this story of a robbery that was doomed from the start adopts a unique approach to the heist genre.

Fusing elements of documentary and drama, American Animals blurs the line between the two without being anything so bland as a docudrama.

Two college students toy with the idea of stealing the most valuable book in the world from a special vaulted collection in a university library, enlisting two friends to help with the actual robbery.

The spoilt middle class kids haven’t done anywhere near their due diligence, and the robbery starts going to pieces almost before it begins. The pathetic gang persist, clutching desperately to whatever shreds of their disintegrating plan that they can, and whilst the lead-up to the heist and the robbery itself is fascinating viewing, it’s the aftermath which is startlingly, brilliantly realised on screen.
