FRINGE FESTIVAL REVIEW: IDRIS STANTON – WHAM GLAM CIRCUS MAN

Idris Stanton’s Wham Glam Circus Man showcases the very best of what Fringe World is all about – it celebrates circus tricks, comedy, equality and good times for all, and, like all the best Fringe shows, it is hilariously interactive.

A juggler by trade – if juggling is a trade – Stanton frames his one hour one-man circus experience as a stand-up comedy show with a heart of purest glam rock n’ roll. He’s hilarious, self-deprecating, positive – and he admirably makes a point of not swearing, or poking fun at anyone based on their skin colour, sexuality or race.

The 50-strong audience are pumped from the AC/DC intro through Scorpions, Def Leppard, KISS and a hilarious air guitar finale where yours truly was co-opted into the show to do his tennis-racquet best with Black Sabbath, Metallica, Guns n’ Roses and… errrr… a country music hoedown. All those years spent playing air guitar to my record collection finally paid off with five minutes in the spotlight.

Along the way Stanton juggles everything from balls to a chainsaw, performs magic tricks and engages in loads of tomfoolery, engages brilliantly and encourages crowd participation, plays great music, both delivers and receives unbridled enthusiasm to and from the crowd and – most of all – gives everyone a LOT of belly laughs. This may well be our favourite Fringe show of the year.
