Remembering Neal Casal

| 3 September 2019 | Reply

as reflected by Kevin Alfredo (all words and photos)…

Selfish.  In hindsight, that is how I classified what I felt immediately following reading that awful Tweet on the morning of August 27th which announced Neal Casal’s passing.  I thought, I won’t be able to hear that amazing live tone again.  I won’t be able to see him effortlessly weave his intricate guitar melodies across the many outfits that he was showcased in.  I was supposed to have his live music in my life for many years to come.  I, me, me, mine.  Well, it’s not about how I’m affected, and it’s not about how his thousands of fans are affected, nor about how anybody who knew him, including his many band members, are affected.  It’s about Neal…an amazing soul who no longer walks amongst us.

I drove across the state trying to understand what had happened, and, as I got off the exit which would lead me to the quiet place where I am writing this bit, I shut off my mind by playing the first CATS (Circles Around the Sun) albumInterludes for the Dead.  I’m still listening to it…as well as methodically moving through the two plus decades of his catalog.  Because it’s easier to get lost in his music than to think that through all that beauty that he brought forward, there was darkness for him.

So, that’s what gonna happen…from my favorite Cardinals backing on 7/21/07 (https://www.archive.org/details/ra2007-07-21) to last week’s performance at Lockn (https://youtu.be/SkczXe3OLR8), I will remember him by the things he did to make this world a better place via his talents and kind heart, because trying to understand the rest is a futile effort.

Please enjoy these photos of Neal from 2016’s LOCKN’ Festival…

…and from the September 23rd 2016 show from the Crofoot Ballroom in Pontiac, MI
