Dead Letter Circus

Saturday December 1st sees the band conclude the WA part of this tour. Their national tour is the first since the release of self-titled album Dead Letter Circus in September 2018. Supported at Capitol by locals St James Sirens & Opia.

Playing 6 tracks of the 10 on the new album* amongst a selection from their back catalogue.

I was educated into music reviewing by Pitchfork Media, they insist you critique recordings and live events – quoting ‘we are not promoters’

After finding this concept conflicting to me personally and withdrawing from the international music critiquing business, I talk in the first person and I give an honest account – I’m not a sensationalist reporter and I preface this review with this personal information for a reason.

Dead Letter Circus has been one of my favourite bands for over 8 years, as any serious consumer can confirm music is a uniquely personal experience. I have lost count of how many times I have seen DLC perform here in Perth over the years, as they are regular visitors to our state. Last night I stood waiting to be admitted to the venue and could only hear St James Sirens from outside. Sorry Lads, I did get the chance to talk to front man Ben Towie-Anderson. He confessed the guys have never played 3 back-to-back shows in WA and they have had a blast, invaluable experience with a great headline act. Their smiles couldn’t have been broader.

Opia are in a good space as a band with Greg Turner standing in for Ashley Doodkorte on Drums, this incarnation of the band including Ryan Felton joining staples Michael Bok and Dan Zarb to complete Opia’s sound. They seemed to really enjoy performing with a notably more relaxed vibe. They played tight and confidently, I can’t help but notice an increased depth to their sound with the addition of Ryan’s guitar prowess.

DLC came on to the stage and kicked off their set with ‘The Armour You Own’ Capitol was not at capacity but there was a more than decent turn out. A diverse crowd of committed fans, there was no mad lighting show, backdrop or bells & whistles. Not unlike the latest album it felt like a return to a more authentic gig and they performed better than I have seen them in a long time. Sound had only a couple of unbalanced moments early on but when it got on point they shone. They were energized, in great spirits and clearly enjoying themselves. Production on the newest tunes was spot on and Kim’s vocal delivery was impressive. Musically the band have uniquely multi-layered sound, their arrangements build into crescendo’s that command emotive reactions from the listener. Kim Benzie’s tenor vocal range sores and brings extra dramatic effect to their music. Right from the start there has been a consistency to their lyrical message, appealing to listeners to open up their consciousness, to slowly and methodically quest
ion consumer and conformist behaviors. Think a bit harder about life and your individual responsibilities to yourself, your community and your environment. Like most songwriters when interviewed Kim has said that his lyrical concepts are open to interpretation – to this consumer they have added a defining contribution to their music’s dynamic tapestry, one every bit as important as the music itself.

I know we will see them again next year, included in this tour was an experimental promotion app, via Facebook. The app offers a meet & greet with the band when you register you email or mobile number. An email database is still the most effective direct marketing tool to any band, it will be interesting to see how this app will work for other artists & consumers.
