Thirty Seconds To Mars is touring America supporting their latest disc… America.  Jared and Shannon Leto recruited a great set of opening bands to kick each performance off, including their show this week in Detroit.  I arrived too late to catch Joywave, but in time to catch Misterwives play a rousing set that impressed me with their slick pop performance and lively stage presence.  Lead singer Mandy Lee was like a driven women moving all about the stage while singing her heart out on song after song.  I will be watching for them to come back through Detroit to catch a full show next time.  Next up was Walk The Moon, and they played their hearts out, winning over new fans and impressing others in the crowd.  I last saw them open for The Rolling Stones a couple years ago, and these guys were just as pumped to play tonight as they were then, and it came across in their playing.

After the stage was converted and the crowd was properly warmed up, the time arrived for Thirty Seconds To Mars to please their fans and deliver songs from the new album America, as well as a lot of fan favorites from their catalog.  Opening with Monolith, the band came fast and hard and aimed to please.  With a lot of smoke and hazer, coupled with a ton of back lighting, photographers were working hard to get the shots they came for, myself included.  Jared roamed the stage from front to back and side to side, often in running from side to side to make sure fans all over the venue had their chance to see the frontman.  Shannon worked his magic from behind his kit and did the best he could to make himself seen as well.  Next up was a rousing version of a personal favorite “Up In The Air” that got an extended bridge and breakdown thrown into it.  “Kings And Queens” kept the sound flowing and action moving.  Near the end of the track, dozens of large balloons descended from the rafters and made their way all across the pavilion section of the venue.  As the photogs were escorted out of the pit and towards the exit of the venue, the band broke out into “This Is War” and the Leto brothers sounded as good as they ever have when I have seen them or when listening to their catalog in my home collection.  If you get the chance, check this tour out – it is a great night or rock and roll with some cool pop/rock tossed in for good measure.
