Live – Fuckface, XXX & Bunny Monroe – Melbourne, 21 March 2012

Bunny Monroe
Cherry Bar, Melbourne
By Shane Pinnegar

With a deep breath of the hallowed air in Melbourne’s AC/DC Lane, we finally walked into Cherry Bar for the first time on a very quiet Wednesday night, tread gingerly across the carpet that has gallantly soaked up a million beer spills, and order a round of Jacks – only to be assaulted by the frenetic eclecticism that is FUCKFACE.

With the best mind numbingly brilliant name since Lemmy called his proto-Motorhead band Bastard, Fuckface boast a wilful belligerence and a desire to please only themselves. With a (mostly) punk countenance, they still make every song sounds completely different, blasting through a Dead Kennedys influenced number, cowpunk, a shouty early Clash styled rant, a wild surf instrumental (Clean Cut), which blew me away – all served up with glorious heaviness and aplomb, and despite the schizophrenic listening experience, they have a charm to them, and their desire to just have fun and please themselves is infectious.

XXX didn’t capitalise on the energy Fuckface (couldn’t help but say it again!) had filled the room with, and we found ourselves getting some fresh air in the lane again. Before BUNNY MONROE took to the stage.

Formed by five young ladies who work the Cherry Bar bar, Bunny Monroe know what they want to be and are obviously displeased by the slim crowd in tonight. Still, surly demeanours aside, they kick out the mother f*cken jams and rock hard and loose with a sound rooted in sweaty, Aussie pub rock. By this time those rounds of Jacks and a few too many Spanish wines over Tapas had caught up with us and The Rockpit made a tactical withdrawal, making a mental note to see how both Fuckface (couldn’t resist, again!) and Bunny Monroe have developed by the time we next grace Melbourne town.
