The Mountain Winery, Saratoga, California
By Robert Kitay

I’ve been waiting for this show for almost 30 years.  Even though I’m more of a hard rocker and metal head, I’ve always been a big fan of both Supertramp and Roger Hodgson’s solo material.  The interesting thing is that Roger Hodgson lives just over 2 hours from the San Francisco Bay Area in the Sierra Nevada foothills, yet he has never performed a solo show here, until now.  The closest Roger has come to a solo show here was when he played in Ringo Star’s band in 2001, when he was able to play three of his songs.  Clearly, I was very excited to see this show.  I was not disappointed.

The Mountain Winery is one of the most beautiful in the country, and was truly fitting of this show. Roger delivered a solid performance mixing in some of his well known solo tracks, lesser known songs, and Supertramp classics, and the crowd ate it up.  There were standing ovations after well over half the songs.  Roger played his keyboard during most of the show, but also played acoustic guitar and piano as well.  His backing band was fantastic, and included second keyboardist Kevin Adamson, drummer Bryan Head, bassist Ian Stewart and Aaron MacDonald, who played sax, keyboards, and whatever else was needed.

Roger’s delivery made it apparent that the songs still have a deep meaning to him and that he still isn’t tired of playing them.  His voice has lost nothing over the years, and he still has the distinctive voice that has been missing in Supertramp in the decades since he left.  The highlights for me included fantastic versions of “In Jeopardy,” “Hide in Your Shell,” “The Logical Song,” and “Give a Little Bit.”

Although I thought it was a great setlist, I have to admit that I was disappointed that he didn’t play “It’s Raining Again,” which he has been playing on this tour, and “Had a Dream (Sleeping with the Enemy),” which he hasn’t been playing.  Maybe he’ll play those songs next time; I just hope I don’t have to wait another 30 years for him to come around again.
