A Dirty Dozen with RICH HOPKINS from DEEPFALL – October 2019

According to a recent press release: “DEEPFALL conjures an enveloping storm of carefully crafted hard rock that strikes the soul with stinging honesty. Cutting to the bone with soaring instrumental passages, spirited choruses, and precisely placed breakdowns, the band thrives in the expanse of rock ’n’ roll’s vast sub-genres.” We get frontman Rich to discuss new music, influences, and much more…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release. What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through? Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

No hidden nuggets, the song was resurrected in the studio working with Matt Daugherty. We all re-wrote the song together and by the time we were done, we came out with a hard hitting straight forward single.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

Definitely had to have been my Father. Although, till the day he passed he would jokingly call me a traitor for following the rock and roll path with him being a country player… haha

3. Building on that, is there a specific song, album, performer, or live show that guided your musical taste?

I was a lover of music growing up., so limiting it to just one is hard but my first concert was Creed, Default and 12 Stone at the Van Andel Arena. Default stole the show that night. I was on the fence, center stage and connected with every member of the band! They were incredible!

4. Who would be your main five musical influences?

I believe every member would have an entirely different outlook on this, haha, my main five would be Ben Burnley, Chris Cornell, Myles Kennedy, Corey Taylor, and of course my father.

5. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?

These are great questions…. hard to narrow it down. Ben Burnley for sure. I think our styles would be collectively be amazing or he would just do all the work and still be just as amazing haha. If I could bring him back, Chris Cornell would also be incredible to work with.

6. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before? What is the one comparison a reviewer or fan has made that made you cringe or you disagreed with?

I’ve tried describing it to many people and I still haven’t found a correct answer… I was once told that I sound like Billy Joel…. not that I cringed at the thought… just didn’t understand where it came from… maybe they were drunk… or I was drunk haha

7. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

Getting to create something out of nothing that means everything…

8. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

Tim definitely cooks! We’re blessed to have our very on 5 star chef on board!! Taylor and I are the Shenanigans of the band and Aba and Max (if they ever set them down) are first to get the guitars out.

9. When was the last time you were star struck and who was it?

I don’t usually get “star struck” musicians are people… hasn’t really happened yet.

10. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

A Musician!!! Lol

11. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”, even if it didn’t change your current situation?

I don’t believe in do overs. Everything that has happened has led me to where I am today, there are no do overs… no plan “B”. Having a plan “ B” is a recipe for failure and perfection is impossible, so live with your mistakes. Just don’t make the same one twice.

12. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

Queen’s A Night at the Opera would have been wonderful to witness in the making. To me the album demonstrates that anything can work if you put your mind to it.
