A Dirty Dozen with HUBBATH and OBESYX of BELZEBUBS – June 2019

| 26 June 2019 | Reply

According to a recent press release: “Kvlt cartoon band Belzebubs released their eagerly awaited debut album Pantheon of the Nightside Gods on April 26th via Century Media. Recorded at Hellhole Studios during autumn 2018, Pantheon of the Nightside Gods also features a fierce roster of guest talent, including the likes of Desibelius, ICS Vortex and Skvllcraft and more. The album was mixed and mastered by the legendary Dan Swanö, who’s also responsible for the sound of DARK FUNERAL’s The Secrets Of The Black Arts, DISSECTION’s The Somberlain and many others.” We get the band to discuss new music, influences, and much more…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

Hubbath: Ah, where should I start… It’s a swirling magnum opus of black & death metal, full of tasty nuggets hidden in each song. One or two spins isn’t even remotely enough for one to gobble up all them nuggets.

Obesyx: Yeah, nurse and chew those nuggets, the satisfaction will last longer.

Hubbath: Seriously speaking, the album is full of little details both in the lyrics and music, so the record definitely won’t wear out quickly. It’s built layer upon layer, so you can enjoy our nuggets ad infinitum and still find a new taste, something new to masticate and marvel.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

Obesyx: My parents signed me up for piano lessons when I was four. I hated it first, but perversely started loving it after some years. I’m submissive.

Hubbath: Well, Sløth and I were schoolmates and we were into metal, rpg’s and all kinds of nerdy, occult stuff. We consumed all the possible metal albums we could get our hands on and I guess at some point listening to music just wasn’t enough, you know. I wanted closer to the source, in a way, and that opportunity suddenly presented itself when Izkariot—our former drummer—asked Sløth if he could join our “band”. The truth was that we actually didn’t have a band, but Izkariot had thought so thanks to some fake album covers Sløth had doodled for imaginary bands. He was older, though, going to concerts, crashing parties and hanging out with hot goth girls, so of course we wanted in on this.

3. Building on that, is there a specific song, album, performer, or live show that guided your musical taste?

Hubbath: Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk is maybe the most influential for me. If we rewind back a bit more, it’s probably the Synthesizer Greatest volumes in the 80’s.

Obesyx: Richard Wagner’s “Ring of the Nibelung” and Beethoven’s 5th. Oh, and “Dechristianize” by Vital Remains.

4. Who would be your main five musical influences?

Hubbath: Musicians? Well…Cliff Burton, Peter Steele, Dan Swanö, Vangelis, and Hans Zimmer.

Obesyx: I’ll narrow this down to just guitarists in order to make it a little easier: Andy LaRoque, Jimi Hendrix, Dimebag, Marty Friedman, and Ihsahn.

5. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?

Hubbath: Bring back Freddie Mercury from the grave.

Obesyx: Or Lemmy.

Hubbath: Or Chuck Schuldiner.

Obesyx: And then we’d need a drummer as well… Buddy Rich.

Hubbath: And why? We’ll I’d just like to see them jam “Cathedrals of Mourning.”

6. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before? What is the one comparison a reviewer or fan has made that made you cringe or you disagreed with?

Hubbath: Well, our roots lie in more straightforward Scandinavian black metal, but I guess our current sound would be something like, uhh, Infernal Blackened Death Metal with Symphonic and Progressive Elements.

Obesyx: Sløth called it “ProBE DeMON” at some point.

Hubbath: What?

Obesyx: Progressively Occult Blackened Elegian Death with Melodic Orchestrations & Neoclassicism.

Hubbath: Haha, well that’s about as accurate as it gets. But speaking of cringy, some reviewers clearly just want to side against us. Doesn’t feel fair, of course, when one doesn’t give the music a chance and hates it beforehand. Luckily these are a minority, but of course it’s disappointing when someone you looked up to—and imagined to have the brains to understand our concept—clearly doesn’t get it.

Obesyx: Or doesn’t want to get it.

Hubbath: Yeah, that, too. But it’s a free world. As said, luckily the majority of people are backing us up, you know.

Obesyx: And we’ll keep doing our own thing anyway. We’re not trying to please anyone.

Hubbath: Trve dat.

7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

Hubbath: Sløth is a master chef as he cooks for his family every day. I think we all are equally involved in drinking as that’s quite a natural way for us to relax and chill… and then Obesyx whips up that acoustic guitar and ruins it for everyone.

Obesyx: Oh come on. You all like to sing along.

Hubbath: Okay we do. Whenever “Ye Entrancemperium” or “Dancing Queen” comes up, the Belzebubsian male choir jumps in.

8. When was the last time you were star struck and who was it?

Obesyx: When we saw the Arch Enemy dudes and dudette at Tuska?

Hubbath: Was there someone else there with Alissa? I didn’t notice.

Obesyx: Well, she was cuddling with Doyle all the time…

Hubbath: Hmph.

9. What is the best part of being a musician? If you could no longer be a musician for whatever reason, what would be your dream job?

Obesyx: You get to do what you love. Hopefully.

Hubbath: Live shows and the interaction with the crowd…Composing new killer songs…I even like the studio work.

Obesyx: If I couldn’t make music then what’d be the point in living anymore?

Hubbath: That’s pretty dramatic.

Obesyx: I guess it’d be full-time satanism and hedonism for me.

Hubbath: I’d aim to be a professor of medieval literature at some old university. Could combine satanism and hedonism with that.

10. What is one question you have always wanted an interviewer to ask – and what is the answer? Conversely, what question are you tired of answering?

Hubbath: First one: “My incredibly nice, sweet, intelligent and hot friend would like to date you. Is that possible?” Answer: “By all means.”

Obesyx: Second one: “But this music is not real black metal, is it?” Answer: “Free your mind, take your head out of your arse and just embrace it.”

11. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”, even if it didn’t change your current situation?

Hubbath: Beatrix might have been a mistake.

Obesyx: Hey, none of you were coming up with any ideas! You would’ve preferred to cancel the show?

Hubbath: Well, we shall forever be remembered as the band who had an inflatable sex toy as a drummer.

Obesyx: That’s kvlt as fuck.

12. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

Hubbath: Maybe In the Nightside Eclipse [Emporer]… Would have liked to smell that atmosphere.

Obesyx: I know how the atmosphere smells in a studio room crammed with sweaty Norwegian guys…

Hubbath: Smell of evil.

Obesyx: But I would’ve liked to be there when King Diamond did Abigail. Those must have been times.

Hubbath: The smell of sweaty Danish guys.

Obesyx: Rød pølse party.
