10 Quick Ones with MODERN MIMES – August 2018

| 17 August 2018 | Reply

According to a recent press release: “Modern Mimes is an American music artist duo from Fort Lauderdale, FL. The duo consists of Adi Elcida Hernandez on vocals/guitar/sampling and Ernesto Paezon the double neck guitar bass. Their music can be best described as “Future Goth,” a term they coined in order to explain the fusion of alternative heavy guitar riffs, powerfully haunting vocals, subconscious provoking lyrics, electronic drums, and catchy pop melodies. The band will release their latest single titled “Stare” on August 15th to all digital retail outlets.”  We get Adi and Ernesto to discuss new music, influences, and much more in our 10 Quick Ones…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

Our latest release “STARE” has a personal message yet is still open to interpretation to the listener. There’s a guitar riff in the chorus that may not be heard on the first listen, but if you go back a second time, you might be able to hear a lead line.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

Adi:  I was born sporting a Mohawk and Ernesto’s first born photograph is him holding up horns; I think it was predestined. Hah!

3. Who would be your main five musical influences?

Adi: Maynard James Keenan, Incubus, Portishead, Bjork, and Alanis Morissette.

Ernesto: Jerry Cantrell, Dimebag Darrel, Michael Angelo Batio, Scott Putesky, and John 5.

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?

Ernesto: Lajon Witherspoon or even though it’d be impossible, I have to say Peter Steele of Type O Negative.

Adi: I’d have to say Trent Reznor.

5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?

High energy , philosophical, and eerie. Somewhat dark with some light at the end of the tunnel.

6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

Being able to express yourself in an artistic way.

7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

Ernesto: I usually do most of the cooking. No one can resist my chicken Marsala! Adi would definitely be the one that starts the Kumbaya on the acoustic. Or maybe we would both start humming our favorite video game tunes. Mostly the Super Mario theme song.

8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

Ernesto: I was in martial arts for a long time so I think I’d be interested in doing something like MMA or Boxing.

Adi: Most likely a film director/script writer or something where I can just hang out with animals all day, or better yet I’d be a monk.

9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?

Adi: I think we’re steadily growing and the only way to look is forward. Patience is a virtue, there’s no room for regrets.

Ernesto: I think I’d go back and get classical music training at a young age. I feel it would benefit my song writing.

10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

Adi: hmm…I think it would be pretty amazing to go back to the 60’s and work with Jimi Hendrix on Are You Experienced… to me that just defined the whole era.

Ernesto: That’s an awesome question. Personally, I’d love to go back to the early 90’s at my age now and work on pretty much every grunge album, especially with bands like Alice In Chains and Soundgarden. If I had to choose one, It’d probably be Alice In Chains Dirt.
