10 Quick Ones with THE BEAST OF NOD – June 2018

According to a recent press release: “Intergalactic Death Metal Band THE BEAST OF NOD has released their debut album, VAMPIRA: DISCIPLE OF CHAOS with an accompanying comic book for fans of Sci Fi and vicious metal. To showcase the Boston based group’s unique style and musical vision, they’ve also released a lyric video for the single “Behold! … But Beware the Celestial Cetaceans! “. We get the band to discuss new music, influences, and more in our 10 Quick Ones…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

Our new album “Vampira: Disciple of Chaos” was released on May 21st. The music revolves around The Land of Nod universe and details the characters and storylines therein. Vampira Infernalis, PotRoast the Rhinoman, and The Cybernetic Tiger with a Dorsal-Mounted Laser Cannon are a few of the characters you’ll be introduced to.  We also have a comic book, backstories for characters and events, 360 Stereoscopic 3D VR playthrough videos, rig run down videos, 4K guitar playthrough videos out and more on the way!  We’ll be releasing a new piece of content every week. The lyrics, comic book, backstories, and even musical composition are littered with references and parodies of all different types.  For example, the cover of the first issue of the comic is a parody of the first issue of The Hulk and in the song Behold! . . . But Beware the Celestial Cetaceans! there is a polyrhythm based on a certain number of digits of pi. There is a “brontosaurs” sound mixed into one song . . . good luck finding it!

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

Paul: The first time Paul saw the 1986 Transformers movie as a child and experienced the awesomeness of that soundtrack his path was set.

Görebläster: Gamma radiation leaked from a tokamak at MIT during an experiment that Görebläster was running.  From this he gained super human guitar playing abilities.  It was from this moment on he realized that he had to create Intergalactic Death Metal.

Brendan: After seeing Quaid’s performance in the 1990 film Total Recall Brendan knew he just had to had to play bass for a metal band.

Nate: He has always played drums and always will.  There was no one moment, it is all moments.  He is constant.

3. Who would be your main five musical influences?

To name just five and to stay within metal I’d say Scale the Summit, Dying Fetus, Plini, Cannibal Corpse, and Animals as Leaders.

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?

Com Truise.

5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?

Intergalactic Death Metal [noun] 1. A subgenre of death metal music featuring linear song structures, odd time signatures, and extremely technical passages, wherein songs explore the characters and events of a sci-fi universe called “The Land of Nod.”

6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

Performing live, hands down.  There’s just nothing like it.

7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

Paul is also known as Uncle Buck, he fills this role well, typically picks up food and whatever else the band might need.  The other guys tend to pick up beers and whatnot.  Although we’ve never had an acoustic singalong and I’m not sure we ever will.

8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

None of us have been or currently are full-time musicians.  Being a full-time musician is our dream job.

9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?

Although we certainly could have done somethings better in the past and even now there hasn’t been anything that we would like to do over.  We stay evaluative and are always learning and implementing new improvements.

10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

Paul: The 1986 Transformers movie soundtrack.  It’s pretty much a summation of who I am.

Görebläster: Scale the Summit – Monument.  This band was a major influence for me as a guitarist and it would be incredible to see the recording of their debut album.

Brendan: Raffi – “Baby Beluga.”  I am the man I am today because of this one song.

Nate: Rammstein – Reise, Reise.  I love Germans and pyrotechnics.
