10 Quick Ones with JIM MÜLLER of KISSIN’ DYNAMITE – May 2018

According to a recent press release: “Bring back stadium rock! Today, Metal Blade Records are happy to announce the signing of KISSIN´ DYNAMITE, one of Germany’s most promising rock bands. Sony Music label Columbia will handle affairs and releases of the group in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. First on the agenda is the release of Ecstasy KISSIN´ DYNAMITE´s new studio album, on July 6. It is the follow-up to Generation Goodbye (2016), which reached #14 in the official German album charts.” We get guitarist Jim Müller to discuss new music, influences, and more in our 10 Quick Ones…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

Our latest release Ecstasy is a modern Hard Rock EP, giving you good vibes for a nice turn on your motorcycle or car in summer. Those of you out there knowing us from the very beginning in 2007 might realize that it’s kind of a back to the roots album, but you have to find the hidden nuggets on your own.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

It was back in 2001 when Andi our drummer showed me a VHS of AC/DC. I couldn’t believe how much energy Angus had and I wanted to do this on my own. Andi also showed me my first riffs and so it came along that i played almost every AC/DC Song in the next couple of weeks and years before realizing that there are also many other rockbands out there. After I saw Iron Maiden for the first time, every inch of my brain was fixed to become a musician.

3. Who would be your main five musical influences?

Talking about musical taste it’s definitely based on 80’s Rock from Motley Crüe to Scorpions. But I also love Rammstein (the cliché is real). When it comes to playing guitar, i totally dig Dough Aldrich for his tastiness and Herman Li for his speed.

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?

If i could choose any musician, dead or alive, I would love to have Steve Lee or Freddy Mercury jamming with me. A little bit more realistic is Steve Lukather.

5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?

It’s modern Hard Rock and our mission is to bring back stadium rock!

6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

There are so many! But number one for me is playing live! You’re on stage in front of thousands of people, playing your own song, the band goes wild, the crowd goes wild and you’re slamming a crazy guitar solo out of the speakers in a pose that normally would break your back. Adrenalin is flowing through your veins, the girls love you and the boys want to be like you. BEST. FEELING. EVER. Number two is traveling by the way… Different city every night, you get the point 😉

7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

As we are best friends for many many years now, it would definitely be (or it always is) like that: Steffen (Bass Guitar) is bringing a case of beer, Andi a bottle of Jack and we get wasted having great and funny talks. Our singer and songwriter Hannes will pick up a guitar then, showing us his guitar skills (it’s been almost the same riffs for years now) and later that night Ande will break it apart thinking it’s funny. Haha. I love those happenings.

8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

I would be a pilot because he’s traveling and having girls as well. Pilots are also rockstars. But my goal is to become a pilot and musician. I already got really good skills in flying, proving my visit at an Airbus Flight Simulator a couple of years ago.

9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?

In a band there are always ups and downs (mostly in hotel rooms on tour), but looking back everything turned out really good. So I wouldn’t change a thing, except starting even more early.

10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

My all time favorite album is Appetite for Destruction by Guns ‘N’ Roses. I love the songs, i love the sound and i love the vibe. I wake up in the morning looking at the artwork on my wall. Actually the official one, i need to get a flag with the banned one as well. This album was released in 1987, the peak of Rock. The time where it was normal that rock bands sell out stadium shows around the globe, at least that’s what people tell me as I wasn’t even born then.  TAKE ME THERE!
