10 Quick Ones with BRANDON GARRETT of 45 TO ARGOS – April 2018

| 19 April 2018 | Reply

According to a recent press release: “Southwest Michigan based, Alternative Rock trio 45 To Argos has released the Official Music Video for their uplifting single, “Dreamcatcher.” Directed by front-man Brandon Garrett and filmed by Chase Krueger, the video was shot in the garage of bassist Brandon Cromer, in Watervliet, MI over the course of about 7 hrs.”  We get Brandon Garrett to discuss new music, influences, and more in our 10 Quick Ones…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

This is our most experimental music video yet. We weren’t sure how it was going to turn out at first, but it ended up being the most fun video shoot we’ve ever done. The first time you listen to the song, you might not notice how much synth we put in it. There is synth throughout almost the entire song, it just blends so well with the guitars you might not pick up on it unless you’re really listening for it.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

All three of us knew we wanted to do music from a very young age. The bands we were exposed to got us into playing music, and the more we did it, the more right it felt. On top of that, we were lucky enough to have our parents support us when we told them we wanted to be musicians, which was huge.

3. Who would be your main five musical influences?

Green Day, Halestorm, Ozzy, Panic! At The Disco, and Metallica

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?

We aren’t exactly his style, but having an artist like Chino from Deftones would make for an interesting collaboration.

5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?

We are punky alternative rock. We try to exercise our creativity and genre-bend, so you’ll find some jazz, metal, and pop elements throughout our stuff too. Boxing ourselves into one genre would be too constricting.

6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

Connecting with other people who love music is definitely the best thing about what we do. Music lets us connect with many people from very different backgrounds and lifestyles. In our opinion, music is beautiful because it is truly the most universal and mutually understood thing in the world.

7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

We’re all pretty even on drinking and noodling on acoustics in our free time. For cooking though, it’s definitely our drummer, Dave. He loves to cook.

8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

Either a Hollywood film director or one of those guys that has a TV show and travels around the world to eat a lot of food.

9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?

In regards to being a professional musician of course there were hard learned lessons, but I wouldn’t go back and change anything. Everything we’ve done, good or bad, has turned us into the musicians and people we are now. We are artists, after all. Art is imperfection, and our past is who we are.

10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

I would love to witness Green Day recording American Idiot. I was only about 8 years old when it came out, but it really impacted me and my musical tastes forever. I’m a recording nerd, so I would be all over their control room and live room checking out their setup and watch how they used it.
