10 Quick Ones with WEESP – October 2017

| 14 October 2017 | Reply

According to the bands Wikipedia page: “Weesp is a band, formed in 2008, which mixes such music genres as alternative rock and metal. As well Weesp can be recognized by using analogue synths a lot, which can especially be noticed in their latest albums. Even though band members call their style alternative rock, some music journalists describe it as “combination of metal and rock genres”, and some songs they define as nu-metal.” We get the band to answer our 10 Quick Ones about new music, their influences, and more…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

Mi: Our latest release The Void gathered all our experience during a long period from 2012 till 2015. For all Weesp members, it was a hard period of important and influential events in life. We have experienced losses of a loved ones, inner depressions of self-realization, a reasoning about love and people around it, stimulation of taking more and more from our lives. All the songs on this album are elaborated very carefully. Each note carries a meaningful message. We’ve recorded a lot of real classic stringed instruments, a harp, a piano, some fretless instruments. We’ve tried to make a rich sound structure by adding some additional voices on the tracks which barely can be heard, but if you’ll give it a good listen – you’ll catch the idea and get a thrill. And now we’re very excited about our 2nd album that we already recorded and now it’s now on the mixing\mastering stage. It will be called Black Sails. It is anxious, dark, thoughtful. Overall very emotional work straight from our hearts. We are sure you will love them too. We plan it to be released at the beginning of next year. And very soon we’ll release few singles from it.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

Mi: I listen and love music since childhood. But decided to learn how to play bass and start a band when saw a legendary Off The Map DVD by Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Live by Korn (almost at the same time). These concerts just blew me away.

Mike: Same with me.

Lex: And i loved to listen to Radiohead and Offspring. I think these are the bands which inspired me to start a band.

3. Who would be your main five musical influences?

Mi: Tool, Neurosis, Muse, Deftones, Nine Inch Nails.

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?

Mi: On our latest album The Void, we have two songs featuring guest vocals from Cory of Norma Jean. Love this dongs very much and he did a really good job. We will have no features on the next album. I wish to have James from Metallica or Chino from Deftones as guest vocals on one of the future recordings.

5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?

We call it “Weesp metal” – progressive atmospheric alternative post metal with a lot of analog synth and clean vocals. Something like that.

6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

Writing music, recording it and playing live, live on tours, meeting other musicians and indifferent people. And beer, girls and constant partying of course!

7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

Mi and Lex will both stay till the end at any party. But yes, other guys will also do, haha.

8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

Mi: I’ll be a racecar driver.

Lex: And i’ll be an astronaut. What can be better than this and playing music?

9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?

Of course there’s a lot of them, but they are not so painful to want to have a “do over”.

10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

Mi: I have a lot of very meaningful recordings as everyone of us do. But i don’t want to make changes to any of them. They are what they are and this makes them beautiful. I might better make more records by myself and be a part a music world. I wish that it will be meaningful to somebody else.
