Alex Richmond, Smokin’ Mirrors guitarist answers Twenty Questions with 100% ROCK MAG

Smokin Mirrors - Alex Richmond 01

1. What will you be playing on the upcoming tour?

I’ll be playing my guitars! And my band Smokin’ Mirrors will be playing songs off our debut EP ‘Set To Ignite’ which we’re officially releasing in Sydney on Saturday November 16th.

And offstage we’ll be teaching everyone how to play ‘King of Beers’, which is the greatest drinking game of all time!

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realised you wanted to be a musician?

Don’t laugh but I used to play the trombone. I was always into music but then one day I picked up a guitar… and I just never put it down again. Eventually I realised that I never wanted to do anything else.

3. Who are your main five musical influences?

I grew up listening to thrash metal, and right now I’m really into jazz, but most of the songs that I write with Smokin’ Mirrors are a lot more hard rock based. I pretty much love anything that’s guitar-driven and interesting, regardless of genre, but I guess my top 5 influences would have to be…

METALLICA – favourite band of all time!
VAN HALEN – not so much because of Eddie’s guitar style, more because of the way they write their songs.
THE DARKNESS – Amazing songwriters who make simple riffs lots of fun to play.
MARTY FRIEDMAN (Formerly of MEGADETH) – His exotic note choice and insane vibrato makes the world shake!!!!
VINNIE MOORE – A very underrated player who made 80’s shredding look so easy! His melodies!!! Crikey!!!

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?

Marty Friedman – I would shit myself.

5. Who would be your dream band, living or dead?

Drums: Either JEFF PORCARO from TOTO (He’s one groovy bastard) or this guy

Bass: LOUIS JOHNSON (MICHAEL JACKSON’s old slapper) what an animal!

Guitar: GUS G from FIREWIND/OZZY OSBOURNE to mix up the groove with some absolute shredding insanity
Vocals/rhythm: JAMES HETFIELD from METALLICA.

Imagine that band! Fuck, they’d be tight.

6. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?

Less cocks than your average rock band, but with way more balls.

But feel free to actually listen and judge for yourself! You can stream the shit out of out our debut single ‘Set To Ignite’ HERE

7. What’s the coolest thing that a fan has ever done for you?

My favourite thing is when fans offer to help load the gear out! One of our really dedicated fans has insisted on loading out my entire rig a few times now…. That’s pretty cool! Load-outs are the worst!!!

8. Any tips on how to keep in shape on the road?

Mi Goreng and Banana Oak.

9. What’s the best thing about being a muso?

Sharing your music with new people and getting to experience their reactions after you melt their faces with rock power!! \m/

10. What’s the worst part of touring?

Not having the home bowl advantage. There’s nothing worse than using an unfamiliar crapper.

11. Who was the last legitimate rock star you met in person?

Sam Totman from Dragonforce – he gave us free beers! Champion!

12. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

The entire band pretty much lives together so we all do each of the above! Except Matt our bass player, he only just learned how to cook scrambled eggs for the first time so we don’t let him near the kitchen.

13. Which act would you like to just give up and go away?

Pretty much every indie band that uses mandolins, tambourines, clapping and reverb-soaked ‘oohs’ in their songwriting, and dresses like the 50’s just had sex with the 70’s and had a really ugly vision-impaired baby. So pretty much every band on the radio today.

14. What would the band’s superpowers be?

How about the power to kill a yak… from 200 yards away… with MIND BULLETS!

15. If you could make one band reform, who would you pick?

Pantera, but that would involve bringing Dimebag back from the dead. Maybe that can be the band’s superpower?!

16. For the tech-heads, what equipment do you use?

Haha well if you reallyyyy wanna know…

Marshall JCM900 4100 Head
Marshall 1960BV with vintage 30’s (cab)
Schecter V1 Classic (guitar)
Schecter C7 Blackjack (guitar)
Boss DD7 (pedal)
MXR Micro Flanger (pedal)
MXR EVH Phase 90 (pedal)

17. If you weren’t a muso, what would be your dream job?

I wouldn’t mind, as long as it paid more than being a muso (which wouldn’t be hard at all!).

18. What do you most want to achieve before old age kicks in?

I would love for everyone who’s reading this to watch this behind-the-scenes clip of the making of my band’s music video! Hopefully before I get too old to remember how to use the internets.

19. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

Metallica’s Master of Puppets… It was the album that got me completely hooked on the heavier side of music and inspired me to push myself with my lead playing!

20. What, for you, is the meaning of life??

Please refer to question 8.
