Anyone who knows anything knows that The Reverend Willie G, Billy F Gibbons, is a dead set Texan legend, a man whose guitar work with The Moving Sidewalks and ZZ Top are unimpeachable. More recently, though, his efforts haven’t been as well received. His debut solo album Perfectamundo – credited to Billy Gibbons & The BFG’s – fell flat, and a recent tour of the Eastern States of Australia met with widespread criticism and allegations of confusion over whether it was a traditional tour, or intended only as a series of promotional appearances.

Either way, he’s back with another solo album, this time billed solely as Billy F Gibbons, though with the majority of The BFG’s band still on the roster.

The album opens strongly with Missin’ Yo’ Kissin’, playing strongly to La Grange (right down to a frisky “how how how”) and capturing this old bluesy rock dog in fine form. Credited to Gibbons’ wife Gilly Stillwater, it’s a stompin’ track.

The rest of the album is made up of Gibbons originals – My Baby She Rocks, Second Line, Let The Left Hand Know, That’s What She Said, Mo’ Slower Blues, Hollywood 151 – all of which are cool, without being special. Second Line is the pick of the litter and well worthy of a ZZ Top album.

There’s also covers of his faves Muddy Waters (a superb slow grinding Standing Around Crying and Rollin’ And Tumblin’), Bo Diddley (Crackin’ Up) and Diddley’s piano man Jerome Green (Bring It To Jerome, which unfortunately plods where it should swing). Crackin’ Up is best, and if some of its playfulness could have been carried over into the rest of the album, The Big Bad Blues might have been as big and bad as it wants to.
