Longtime Guns n’ Roses also-ran Dizzy Reed makes his play for a little bit of spotlight of his own after his 28-year tenure working for Axl Rose, delivering this unexpectedly solid collection of sleazy rock n’ roll.

Reed has written most of the album with Del James, a good friend of Axl Rose’s who features here and there in the GnR story. Almighty/Thin Lizzy/Black Star Riders guitarist & frontman pitches in with co-writes on the excellent This Don’t Look Like Vegas and the okay Mystery In Exile, also contributing guitar, and there are a host of friends (including members of Guns n’ Roses, W.A.S.P., No Doubt, Armored Saint, Biohazard, Quiet Riot, Danzig, Psychedelic Furs, T.S.O.L. and Queens Of The Stone Age) guesting on various tracks while Reed plays piano, keys and percussion and sings.

Everything here walks a fine line, though – with GnR releasing so little music in the past 25 years, there is every chance Reed submitted these songs to his boss for consideration, and had them rejected or languish unreleased. Who knows, but they all sound like they’d fit in the style of Use Your Illusion, and it’s a little hit or miss whether they fall on the right side of imitation or not.

Whilst Guns n’ Roses die hards will drool over everything here, hailing it as some kind of masterpiece, the truth is that it IS derivative, a good album but not a great one, and certainly not groundbreaking. Mind you, with GnR albums thin on the ground, that may be enough for many of the faithful.

The aforementioned This Don’t Look Like Vegas is a definite winner, as are Reparations, the filthy raw Dirty Bomb and the title track, whereas Crestfallen and I Celebrate sound like GnR castoffs, and Forgotten Cases and Cheers 2 R Oblivion could go either way on any given day.
