Black Stone Cherry - Magic Mountain cover

The Kentucky good ol’ rockin’ boys have seen off their ‘difficult third album’ with nary a scratch, and if you were amongst those thinking Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea lost something with the slick production, your prayers have been answered – BSC have taken the best elements from each of their records to date and made perhaps the album to send them into the headlining strata worldwide.

There comes a time in every successful young band’s career when they have to pause, take stock, and get their heads around where they’ve been, what they’ve achieved, and the changes that has engendered in their lives.

Black Stone Cherry had demons to face, priorities to re-align – lives, in fact, to live. Marriages and kids and problems to deal with.

All of that feeds into Magic Mountain – an album which on first listen might sound a little like too much of a carbon copy of what’s gone before, but which, after a few listens, sets the record straight: there’s depth, passion, growth, excellent songwriting and full force rocking from start to finish.

Lyrically there’s more references to pot than ever before, but it’s the ‘us versus adversity’ theme that is key to building the love in these southern hard-rock-with-a-touch-of-grunge grooves.

Make No Mistake, Me And Mary Jane, Bad Luck And Hard Love and Magic Mountain and the countrified Hollywood In Kentucky are all tailor-made for huge stadium audiences to lap up and chant along to.

That the foursome can pull this all off so well, and without sounding at all contrived, is their ticket to a very long and fruitful career.
