Hailmary - Navigate The Sunrise EP cover

Hailmary are at a career turning point – it is writ large all over this new EP: that indefinable combination of achievement, appreciation and the confidence to make a leap in achievement. It makes the endeavour greater than the sum of the parts of those involved.

Navigate The Sunrise effectively draws a line under Hailmary’s career to date: their songwriting and performances have leapt forward thanks to relentless gigging. They’re no longer playing songs influenced by their inspirations, they’re taking their fans on a journey to new places.

Alice In Chains will be remembered as a pivotal influence on singer/guitarist Kevin Curran, and while you can still hear elements of that sound in Navigate The Sunrise, repeated listens open up new doors – hints of Soundgarden, Velvet Revolver, The Beatles and more.

Even late 2012’s excellent Choice. Path. Consequence. Solution. album didn’t show as many nuances to Hailmary as Navigate The Sunrise. The opener Liar In My Chair connects with fans of the band’s work up to now and reassures them that the band are firing on all cylinders, before the title track and Possible widen the band’s soundscape admirably.

The biggest departure here is the beautiful ballad Waiting For My Time, where the band do something akin to Metallica’s surprise move with Nothing Else Matters: it’s an unexpected and wholly welcome surprise that couldn’t have worked better, before My Song closes proceedings with a faster pace.

In a world drowning under a tsunami of half decent bands putting out half decent material, Hailmary are the real thing and determined to rise to the top of the crop. With Navigate The Sunrise and their impending national tour, they’re well placed to reach the next plateau.
