Mystery - 2013 CD

It’s hard enough to find a teenager who knows much about anything, let alone four who all know exactly what they want to be – in this case, a world-travelling, guitar shredding heavy metal rock n’ roll band – and these Melbourne kids may just have the chops to succeed.

From the first track of 2013 we know exactly what Mystery’s influences are: Eighties heavy metal from Twisted Sister to Quiet Riot, Dio to W.A.S.P., and even a splash or two of Motley Crue and Dokken.

Unsurprisingly, this band of still-seventeen-ish year olds haven’t enough experience out there in on the wide open road to have fully developed an individuality of their own yet, but there is enough spark and gusto bubbling up through their obvious influences to expect a lot more from them in the near future.

Raise Your Fist, Nonstop To Nowhere, On Fire, Rock ‘n’ Roll Forever Be all point to a childhood listening to Mum n’ Dad’s record collection, and while a cover of Stand Up And Shout is a misstep, lacking the punch of the classic Dio original, a metallised stab at Men At Work’s Down Under shows vision and ability.

Produced by Stu Marshall (Death Dealer, Empires Of Eden), 2013 is full of spunk and crunch and a lot of promise – Mystery are definitely one band to keep an eye on.
