Scott McCord and the Bonafide Truth CD

Scott McCord and his 7-piece Bonafide Truth ensemble may call Toronto home, but their musical hearts are further south, down around Memphis way, to be precise.

With a smooth blues sound full of Stax of horns (see what I did there?), McCord’s rich and soulful voice underpins the groove-laden treats on offer on this, their follow-up album to debut Blues For Sunshine.

Short instrumental opener Deploy The Bird will have you thinking of The Blues Brothers Revue, and Beatles classic Baby, You’re A Rich Man gets a soulful Seventies makeover, but it’s the original songs you’ll be coming back for time after time.

Gotta Be Something, This Heart Is On Fire, Where Did You Go?, Much Better and Bad For You all show the band – 2 guitars, bass, drums, keyboards, sax, trumpet and trombone – to be stylishly bluesy, reverential of the past yet always looking forwards, and whip-crack tight as a drum.

Scott McCord & the Bonafide Truth moves at a merry pace from start to finish, showing that smooth and mellow grooves never have to be dull or unengaging, and is a treat to listen to time and again.
