It’s been a while since I found my way inside Detroit’s El Club, but when I heard Margaret Glaspy was in town, I had to check the show out for myself. With a new album Echo The Diamond to promote, Margaret and her band found themselves in Detroit on a Wednesday night. Opener Tasha from Chicago kicked the show off with songs new and old setting the singer / songwriter / guitarist stage for the headliner, but not before treating the crowd to great songs and lots of energy. After a couple handfuls of songs featuring Tasha on guitar and vocals as well as her friend Emmy accompanying her on guitar. Aside from her good songs and vocal, Tasha’s smile between songs when addressing the crowd was contagious.Like clockwork, Margaret and her band took the stage and jumped right into music. With a set that pulled heavily from Echo The Diamond, the evening began with the one-two-three punch of “I Didn’t Think So,” my favorite from the new disc “Act Natural,” and the fun “Irish Goodbye.” Glaspy’s vocals are even more rich and accentuating live as they are recorded. More track from the recent release as well as other from her other major release Emotions And Math. My favorite part of the set happed more than half way in when her performance got stripped back and we were treated to three tracks featuring only Glaspy’s vocals and her guitars work. There was something about the delivery of the trio of songs “Heartbreak,” “Turn The Engine,: and “Somebody to Anybody that struck harder, but on an emotional level. Margaret gave the crowd tidbits about the various songs and interacted offering backstories and thoughts about certain songs and moments throughout the set. The set continued including a fun cover of Alanis Morissette’s “You Learn.” I enjoyed the set and song choices as well as the way Margaret made the show feel like she was playing to each of us individually and collectively at the same time. This is a show not to be missed.
