To help wind down the year and touring through the holidays, Country star Brett Young and his band added a couple Florida dates to their agenda and one of those landed them at the Hard Rock Event Center in Tampa and we were lucky enough to catch the show. After a cool opening set from Australia via Nashville duo Seaforth. After their short stage time, the crowd’s anticipation and excitement grew as the minutes ticked away until Young would hit the stage and deliver a set full of hits and fan favorites. After kicking the show off with “Catch,” smiles, and plenty of interaction with the crowd, Brett grabbed a guitar and joined his band in playing more songs the fans that packed the venue came to hear. Just a few songs into the show Young let us know that he should have cut the tour short due to not feeling 100%, but he wanted to give us the show we were hoping to see and experience. He even joked, “if you think you hear something that sounded wrong, it was probably wrong.” Brett’s band carried the load sonically and gave him the perfect musical runway to take us all on the musical journey through his catalog. One of my new favorite tracks came in the front end of the show with “1, 2, 3 Mississippi” hitting early. I have spun this one many times since hearing it live last week. The crowd that packed the venue from side to side and front to back sang along from song to song with Brett, often almost drowning him out as they all came together like one voice. The show and setlist were put together to keep the show ebbing and flowing from first song to the end of the encore. While he warned us he may not be firing on all cylinders, you would never know it as he worked through the evenings song selections. The joy on Brett’s face as the audience worked with him to make this a night to remember was apparent from song to song and moment to moment. The energy that cascaded from the stage washed over the crowd and was returned in spades as he and his band worked through their time on stage performing songs from his most recent release 2021’s Weekends Look a Little Different These Days. While I am familiar with the hits, I loved the whole package performed tonight as it gave me a sampling of other songs to add to my playlist, like the previously mentioned “1, 2, 3 Mississippi” and reinforced my enjoyment of hits like “Like I Loved You,” “Mercy,” and “In Case You Didn’t Know.” I hope to catch Brett and his group out on the road in 2023 with new music and a renewed energy to continue his chain of hits and packed shows.
