Chet Faker brought his latest tour through Detroit and landed at St. Andrews Hall on a Wednesday night. Warming the crowd up on the tour (and also joining him on stage as part of his band) was Adi Oasis. She took the stage with her band and proceed to deliver a cool set full of funk, killer vibe, and some strong songs that gave the evening a great start. Taking the lead from behind her mic and bass, Adi entertained everyone that made their way to the venue early enough to enjoy a night of music as opposed to just a set. Smiles abound on stage and off, it seemed Adi, her band, and the crowd all meshed in the enjoyment of the evening.
After a short stage turnover, headliner Chet Faker hit the stage joined by Oasis on bass and a drummer. Armed with a setlist of fan favorites and plenty of mixing, he came ready to give the fans that came to the venue what they were looking for. Keeping things to a minimum, Faker (Nicholas James Murphy) let his electronica-tinged version of soul and funk be the star of the show. Keeping things well mixed, Faker performed a few tracks from his 2021 release Hotel Surrender, comprising a third of the set including “Feel Good,” “Get High,” and set opener and closer “So Long So Lonely” and “Low,” respectively. The latter two tracks in addition to “1998” and a cool cover of Blackstreet’s “No Diggity” were the sonic highlights from my listening vantage point. There is no doubt Murphy embraces the Faker side of his creativity and utilizes the opportunity to add to his musical contribution. While I was aware of the above mentioned release, it was some of the other material in the set that made me dig into his catalog after the show. While I typically dig my music on the hard rock side of the street, there is something about Faker’s vibe and delivery that drew me in from the minute he hit the stage and kept me engaged. I can’t wait to enjoy more music under both his stage moniker and real name while I wait for the next opportunity to check him out live, ease back in a venue, and enjoy the show.
Chet Faker Setlist: So Long So Lonely – 1998 – Feel Good – Whatever Tomorrow – Trouble With Us – Birthday Card – Cigarettes and Chocolate – It Could Be Nice – Drop the Game – Get High – No Diggity – Gold – I’m Into You – Talk Is Cheap – Low
